Tree removal in Los Gatos starts from $1,000 per tree with Firefighter Tree Service, and there is no single price that fits every tree above that. Access, the slope of the lot, what the tree hangs over, and the species set the final number. On top of the removal, most Los Gatos homeowners also pay a Town permit fee ($256 for the first tree) and replacement planting, which can matter as much as the tree work itself.

This page explains each piece of that total so you can read an estimate line by line. The permit and replanting figures come from the Town of Los Gatos application form and Private Trees page. The tree work figures are ours. We do not publish a top-end price, because the trees that cost the most are the ones nobody can price without standing under them.

What Tree Removal Costs in Los Gatos

A Firefighter Tree Service removal in Los Gatos is priced per tree, starting from $1,000. The free estimate gives you a fixed number for your tree before any work is scheduled, and the 3-day service guarantee covers standard jobs from the approved estimate.

Why a floor and not a range? Because the honest range in this town is wide. A young crape myrtle by the mailbox on a flat street near Vasona and a 70 foot pine leaning over a house at the end of a narrow Hillside road are both “one tree.” They share almost nothing in labor, equipment or risk. A published range would be accurate for neither of them.

What a quote should include, in writing:

  • The removal itself: climbing, cutting and lowering the tree.
  • Hauling and cleanup of wood, branches and chips.
  • Stump grinding, if you want it, to 12 inches below grade so you can replant or lay sod.
  • Who is responsible for the Town permit and the replacement trees.

What Moves the Price on a Los Gatos Removal

Five things move a Los Gatos tree removal price more than height alone: access, slope, what is underneath the tree, the species and its condition, and whether the tree has to come down in sections. Here is how each one shows up in the work.

Access and Hillside driveways

Access is the first thing we look at. A truck and chipper parked 20 feet from the tree is fast work. A tree behind the house, reached through a 3 foot side gate, means every branch gets carried out by hand. Up in the hills above Highway 17, steep or shared driveways and narrow roads can keep equipment far from the tree, and that time shows up in the price.

Rigging over roofs, fences and wires

When a tree leans over a roof, a pool, a fence or a power line, nothing can simply fall. The crew climbs, ties off each section and lowers it on ropes to a controlled landing spot. Rigging takes more people and more hours than felling, and it is the most common reason a removal costs more than the starting price.

Species and condition

Dense hardwoods like oaks are heavier per section than most softwoods, so pieces have to be smaller and rigging takes longer. Dead trees are a separate problem, and one a certified arborist should look at before anyone climbs: dry wood is brittle, so a climber cannot always trust a dead limb to hold a rope, and the plan has to change. Bark beetles, for example, mostly attack trees already stressed by drought or disease, and a heavily infested pine is usually best removed promptly.

Sectional work without a crane

On many Los Gatos lots a crane simply cannot get close enough, especially on Hillside roads with tight turns and limited space to set up. Sectional removal, where a climber takes the tree down piece by piece from the top, is how those trees come out. It is slower than dropping a tree in an open field, and the price reflects the extra hours aloft.

Number of trees

Two or three trees on the same visit share the setup and travel. The Town also charges less for each additional tree on one permit, so grouping removals saves money on both sides.

Picture a Rinconada homeowner with a dead Monterey pine in the backyard. The tree is 50 feet tall, leans toward the garage, and the only way in is a side yard just wide enough for a wheelbarrow. Height alone says “medium tree.” The real price is set by the lean, the brittle dead wood and the hand-carried debris. That is why we quote from the yard, not from a photo.

Town of Los Gatos Costs to Budget For

If your tree is protected, the Town of Los Gatos adds two costs that belong in your budget: the permit fee and replacement trees. Neither is optional, and neither is set by the tree company.

The permit fee

According to the Town of Los Gatos tree permit application (revised June 28, 2025), the fee is $256 for the first tree and $128 for each additional tree. A denied application gets half the fee back. Most trees on developed residential lots are protected at 12 inches in diameter, or 8 inches on Hillside lots. Our Los Gatos tree removal permit guide covers the thresholds, the measuring rule and the timeline.

The Town Arborist may ask for an arborist report after inspecting the tree. That is not automatic, and it only becomes a cost if the Town asks.

Replacement trees and in-lieu fees

Los Gatos requires replacement planting for most protected removals, sized by the canopy of the tree you remove:

Canopy of removed treeStandard replacementIn-lieu fee if the Town approves
10 ft or less2 trees, 24 inch box2 x $250 = $500
Over 10 to 25 ft3 trees, 24 inch box3 x $250 = $750
Over 25 to 40 ft4 trees, 24 inch box, or 2 trees, 36 inch box$1,000 either way
Over 40 to 55 ft6 trees, 24 inch box, or 3 trees, 36 inch box$1,500 either way
Over 55 ft10 trees, 24 inch box, or 5 trees, 36 inch box$2,500 either way

Developed single-family lots under 10,000 square feet that are not under the Hillside standards may use 15 gallon trees for the three smaller canopy sizes, which are cheaper to buy and plant. The in-lieu fee ($250 per 24 inch box or 15 gallon tree, $500 per 36 inch box tree) needs Town Arborist approval, listed on the Town’s Private Trees page. It is meant for properties where the trees genuinely will not fit.

The numbers in the in-lieu column are the Town’s fees. If you plant instead, your cost is whatever the nursery and planting labor run, which we do not price here.

How the Total Changes With Your Situation

The same removal can carry very different Town costs depending on the tree’s condition and your lot. Three situations cover most Los Gatos calls:

  • If the tree is dead, or the Town Arborist rates it High or Extreme risk: you still pay the permit fee, but no replacement trees are required. On a big canopy, that can be the largest saving in the whole job.
  • If the tree is healthy and on a small flat lot: budget for the permit plus 15 gallon replacements under the single-family option, as long as the canopy is 40 feet or less.
  • If you are on a Hillside lot: the single-family option does not apply, and trees removed 30 feet or more from the house must be replaced with natives from the Town’s Hillside list. Budget for 24 inch box trees or larger.

Here is a worked example with the Town’s real numbers. Say you own a Hillside home and need one healthy pine removed, with a canopy about 30 feet across. The Town side looks like this: a $256 permit, plus 4 replacement trees at 24 inch box or 2 at 36 inch box. If the Town Arborist approves paying in lieu, that is $1,000 either way. So before the tree work is even quoted, the Town costs come to about $1,256. Add the removal, starting from $1,000, and you can see why the permit side deserves a line in the budget.

Emergency Removal: No Surcharge

Emergency tree removal with Firefighter Tree Service costs the same as scheduled work. There is no after-hours or weekend surcharge, and crews respond 24/7.

The Town still has a role. If a tree is an imminent danger to life or property, Los Gatos allows removal without a permit, but you must notify the Town and get approval first: Parks and Public Works at (408) 399-5771 on weekdays from 8 to 4, or the Police at (408) 354-8600 after hours, with photos due within 72 hours. Our emergency tree removal page explains what happens when you call.

Imagine a eucalyptus limb coming down across a driveway in the hills on a Sunday night in January. The family needs the car out by Monday morning. The price for that removal is set the same way as a weekday job, by the size of the tree, the access and the rigging, not by the hour on the clock.

How to Get an Accurate Price

The most accurate Los Gatos tree removal price comes from an estimate at the tree, with the permit question settled at the same visit. To get there:

  1. Measure the trunk at 4.5 feet and check the Town’s Hillside Area Map, so you know whether a permit applies.
  2. Take photos of the whole tree and anything under it: roof, fence, wires, driveway.
  3. Book a free estimate and ask for the price in writing, with stump grinding and haul-away listed separately.
  4. Add the Town costs (permit and replacement) to the tree work for your real total.
